I can’t imagine the stress of a long deployment – on the overseas hero as well as the family back home. Miss you and love you cards have got to be some of the glue that holds the relationships together during these times. Here are some miss you cards for my June Operation Write Home box. This was a class card kit from 2005 (and yes, I did hold onto it that long). I thought it would be interesting to share my creative process on how to bring these old kit parts into current cards.
This is the stack of precut pieces I started with. Originally, the background image was stamped in black ink onto vanilla cardstock but I only had 2 of those prestamped backgrounds (as demo pieces) and no background stamp available to me. I did find 2 card sized pieces adhesive backed patterned paper with a text design – brown ink on ivory cardstock – so I was able to finish 4 cards out of this leftover class kit. I’ll be checking out a craft store after work to see if I can find another sheet of text patterned cardstock to finish the other 4 cards in the class kit. I clear embossed flower images randomly on the text patterned cardstock, then smoosh-sponged mustard, rust, and red onto and immediately around the flower petals, and finished coloring the background by smoosh-sponging moss wherever there was not already color.
This photo compares the black text on vanilla – the fully colored piece and the piece when just the flower centers were colored. (The final card is shown at the top of this post. I stamped the focal image in black ink and used a black pen to add the doodled details to the image.)
This compares the finished background pieces – which color text do YOU prefer? I love how the colored flowers on the brown text version seem to have extra depth, almost looking into a 3D window. On the other hand, the black text version pops with visual interest. Hard to choose.
