A Happy Heart

Don’t you just want to grin when you see this card? I love the little girl holding her bright and shiny heart. The blues & pinks & yellows are cheery, appropriate since the name of this stamp set from TAC is Cheery Thoughts (lol). The card background was stamped repeatedly using a small heart grouping. I used Chalk Pencils and a blender pen to color the yellow aura surrounding the damsel and also on the layered heart punch. I also used them to color her hair and skin but I used a little bit of Prismacolor Pencil to outline where the paper piecings would go (that way if I cut too close the color underneath would camoflauge that mistake). And finally, I added a little bit of Crystal Lacquer (aka Crystal Effects or Diamond Glaze) to the heart she is holding and to her blue shoes. Click here for a closeup of that.

  • Stamps: TAC Cheery Thoughts; TAC Build-A-Background
  • Paper: DCWV Golden Yellow; TAC Lilly Anna cardstock (pink & blue); Strathmore 140# Coldpressed Watercolor Paper
  • Inks: Memento Tuxedo Black; Palette Bordeaux
  • Accessories: Marvy Uchida Extra Jumbo (Yellow) and Super (Blue) Scalloped Heart Punches; SU! Large Heart Punch; Sakura Crystal Lacquer; General Chalk Pencils; Dove Blender; Prismacolor Pencils; SU! Filigree Flower Brad and Clear Rhinestone Brad

Step by step tutorial (click on the Step number to see a photo, if you’re interested)

  • Step 1: Lightly apply yellow chalk pencil around entire stamped image; light tan pencil in hair; light peach pencil on skin (and two red dots for cheek color)
  • Step 2: Blend chalk pencil so it’s darkest closest to the image, fading out. Intermittently apply orange chalk pencil around entire stamped image; medium brown pencil in hair
  • Step 3: Blend orange into yellow, darkest closest to the image; blend hair; blend cheek
  • Step 4: Outline the areas where the paper piecings will go
  • Step 5: Stamp the various images onto several patterned papers and cut out
  • Step 6: Apply the pink pant legs paper and the bottom of the heart paperĀ (Note how some of the pink paper extends into the dress area? It makes it a lot easier to cut out and that tip will be covered by the dress paper later.)
  • Step 7: Apply the blue bodice paper (Note again how some of the blue paper extends into the heart area? It too will be covered up later.)
  • Step 8: Apply the blue dress paper
  • Step 9: Apply the pink heart paper

All that’s left is to assemble card and apply the Crystal Lacquer on the heart and the shoes.

An alternate to paper piecing the heart and shoes would be to color in completely with Prismacolor Pencil and apply Crystal Lacquer directly.
